Figure 1: Components of stove barrier

Our design for the stove barrier consists of two side panels attached to the stove, with a door for the front side. This barrier prevents access to the stove during situations in which the heating elements would otherwise present a potential danger to children reaching up and touching them.

The door slides out of tracks on the left-side panel, and then stops, changes direction on hinges, and is closed with a basic eye-and-hook lock that is both easy to unlock from above and very difficult from the height of a child below.

There are hinges between the small panel and the door, so that the panel will turn towards the inside face of the door.

The side panels are attached to the stove with VelcroŽ and the eye of the eye-and-hook lock put into the inside of the right-side panel so that the hook will be able to connect with it to form the complete lock once the door is closed properly.

The lower tracks on the right-side panel are put into place, the hinged door and small panel put into them in the closed position, and the upper tracks put into place. This ensures that the small panel, slightly larger in height than the attached door, will stop the door from coming out of the right-side panel entirely. The door can now slide in and out and also close across the front of the stove.

Manufacturing

The two main sections of the stove barrier are pre-cut and assembled by hand. The right-side panel and the left-side panel, the latter with the door attached, are shipped out to the customers.

Figure 3: Assembly of stove barrier

As described above, the two main sections of the stove barrier are assembled before shipping. Therefore, the user needs only to put on the lock and VelcroŽ.

The former is attached with its hook on the barrier door, and the eye on the right-side panel; the VelcroŽ is attached to the stove and to the underside edge of the two side panels, then placed so that the barrier is attached to the sides of the stove.
